Sun Protection Suits and UV Wear for Children

By Catherine Graham

It is well known that exposure to the sun causes skin damage, causing premature ageing of the skin and more worryingly, skin cancer. We now know how important it is to protect our skin from sun damage and can achieve this by wearing sun protection clothing.

A white cotton T-shirt has been shown to offer the equivalent sun protection of an SPF 5 sunscreen. The way in which a material is woven has an impact on the sun protection offered. A tighter knit or weave provides greater protection from harmful UV rays, whereas a looser weave will allow more of the sun's rays through.

It is very important for infants to be protected from the damaging effects of the sun to prevent skin cancer in adulthood. Any manufacturer of sun protection clothing needs to have fully tested their garments to be approved as UV protective. The garment should be at least UPF 15 in order to be classed as sun protection clothing.

Generally, sun protection clothing provides better protection from the sun than chemical products. Despite offering a high SPF rating, sunscreens can give a false sense of security and the wearer could remain in the sun for too long a period without re-applying. Very often, not enough sunscreen is applied and each individual's skin type reacts differently to the sun's rays. UV protective clothing will eliminate these concerns.

Remember : UV rays from the sun can cause skin damage on cloudy days , in any temperature and during any season. Most people receive 80% of their lifetime exposure to the sun by 18 years of age. The message to parents from this is to protect your children. Remember, skin cancer is very slow to develop. The sunburn you receive this week may take 20 years or more to become skin cancer.

There are many products on the market from T-shirts and leggings to full-length body suits, rash vests and Legionnaires hats. Whatever garments you choose for your child, you will want to ensure that they are truly protected from the sun. UV protective swimwear with a UPF50+ blocks over 97.5% of the sun's ultra violet rays. Such clothing is therefore not just suitable for swimming but can be also worn for a range of outdoor activities such as cycling, sailing, surfing and playing on the beach or in the garden. There are many brands which specialise in the manufacture of sun protection clothing, selling babies and childrens UV suits through to adults sun protection clothing.

Always stay away from the sun between 10am and 4pm. This is when the sun is at its strongest and the UV damage will be greatest. Wear 100% UV ray protective sunglasses and a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on exposed areas, and always avoid tanning tubes, sun beds, etc.

- It's easy to be disillusioned when the medical specialties advise contradict each other.

The truth is, the sun does not need to be beaming down to cause sun damage to your skin. You must take care to provide your skin with sufficient sun protection year round.

The commonest effects of sun damage can be seen on almost everyone's face. These effects include wrinkles, brown spots, and leathery skin. Chances are plenty of of the anti-aging products which you use such as your eye wrinkle cream aren't actually fighting the signs or aging. These products are actually fighting the evidence of sun damage. Besides the cosmetic damage that can be done by the sun, overexposure to ultraviolet light can also cause skin cancer and pre-cancers. This makes your skin defence more important than ever.

While using suntan lotion is perhaps the most obvious way to defend yourself from sun damage, many people undervalue its part in treating the sun damage that you already have. Sun damage does not occur from one sun burn or tanning session. Sun damage develops over a period of time. By employing suntan lotion each time you are exposed to sunlight, you aren't only defending your skin from further sun damage, you are also giving your skin the time it requires to heal from the sun exposure it has already suffered. This healing time will permit your skin to stop the progression of sun damage, and possibly reverse the sun damage you have already developed.

Be sure to exfoliate your skin. This is particularly necessary if you use self-tanning products or sun tan lotions. These products have a tendency to accumulate on the skin and can cause the skin to become brittle and desiccated. By using a loofah or home microdermabrasion kit you will be able to rid your body of the dead epidermal cells and excess products which are causing this unattractive and unhealthy skin condition.

You can never get enough moisture. Hydration is crucial to healthy skin. You need to hydrate your body from the inside as well as the outside. Be certain to drink masses of water, particularly in the summer months. You should also utilise a hydrating balm or lotion both before and after being exposed to sunlight, chlorine, or salt water. Giving your skin this essential moisture will help you to prevent the drying effect which these elements can have on your skin.

You can reverse the appearance of those brown spots you have accumulated over the years by employing a skin lightener. It is important to realise that a skin lightener does not actually make your skin white. What these products do is free the body of the buildup of unwanted colour. There are many over the counter products which can be used to accomplish this goal.

The most important thing you can do to reduce the appearance of sun damage on your skin is to limit your exposure to the sun. By utilizing sun lotion products to stop further damage to your skin, you'll be giving your skin the best chance for recovery.

Know The Truth Regarding Certain Solskydd (Sunscreen) Misconceptions

By Jason Evans

Many people around the world have become conscious of the advantages of applying solskydd (sunscreen) for skin protection.

Nonetheless, with the many products sold in the market, several product descriptions and formulas confuse lots of people. Here are some of the misconceptions that buyers should be aware of.

1. Sunscreen with UVA protection only is sufficient.

While it's true that UVA rays are harmful to the skin, the effects of UVB rays must not be overlooked. Both UVA and UVB rays affect the skin with many possible illnesses including skin cancer because of overexposure. Damaging effects of the sun to the skin include things like premature aging, dark spots, uneven skin tone, dry skin, sun burn and others. Sunscreens need to have protection for both the UVA and UVB.

2. Re-applying sunscreen which is strong enough or has a higher SPF is not necessary.

This is a misconception that needs to be corrected. Re-application of sunscreen is necessary even those which have higher SPF. Perspiration and water can easily dilute the product which lessens its effectiveness. For many who do outdoor activities like swimming, jogging, hiking and the like, re-application is needed following the activity. For common activities like going out for errands, re-application is also recommended at least every 30 minutes for continuous exposure to sunlight. Have in mind that sunscreen only filters the amount of UVA and UVB which could penetrate the skin. It lessens the incidence of skin damages. It does not completely block it.

3. SPF 15 is sufficient enough for outdoor protection

It could be true that SPF 15 will do for outdoor protection. However, the type of activity you do and the length of time you are exposed to the sun will have to determine if you need a higher SPF or not. The more extensive your outdoor activity is, the higher the SPF you will require. Extensive outdoor activity would require SPF 40 to 50 to guarantee adequate protection. SPF 15 may probably be adequate for normal and common everyday activities.

4. All sunscreen products are the same. They only differ in brand names.

Not all products are made exactly the same though they are all sunscreens. Some products could have better efficacy than others based on the components used. There may be some high-priced products that don't perform very well. On the contrary, there may be some more affordable products that are of high quality. The effectiveness of a product also depends on the type of your skin. There are products that are safe for sensitive skin. Although some good brands may provide good results, it is always best to look into the ingredients. It is best to be sure than to cure. There may be some dangerous ingredients that are contained in the products.

The different products in the market may cause confusion to many consumers. Proper knowledge and awareness about the proper products may offer you effective results. Select the suitable solskydd (sunscreen) to suit your needs so can savor the sun and get the right protection for you.
