Know The Truth Regarding Certain Solskydd (Sunscreen) Misconceptions

By Jason Evans

Many people around the world have become conscious of the advantages of applying solskydd (sunscreen) for skin protection.

Nonetheless, with the many products sold in the market, several product descriptions and formulas confuse lots of people. Here are some of the misconceptions that buyers should be aware of.

1. Sunscreen with UVA protection only is sufficient.

While it's true that UVA rays are harmful to the skin, the effects of UVB rays must not be overlooked. Both UVA and UVB rays affect the skin with many possible illnesses including skin cancer because of overexposure. Damaging effects of the sun to the skin include things like premature aging, dark spots, uneven skin tone, dry skin, sun burn and others. Sunscreens need to have protection for both the UVA and UVB.

2. Re-applying sunscreen which is strong enough or has a higher SPF is not necessary.

This is a misconception that needs to be corrected. Re-application of sunscreen is necessary even those which have higher SPF. Perspiration and water can easily dilute the product which lessens its effectiveness. For many who do outdoor activities like swimming, jogging, hiking and the like, re-application is needed following the activity. For common activities like going out for errands, re-application is also recommended at least every 30 minutes for continuous exposure to sunlight. Have in mind that sunscreen only filters the amount of UVA and UVB which could penetrate the skin. It lessens the incidence of skin damages. It does not completely block it.

3. SPF 15 is sufficient enough for outdoor protection

It could be true that SPF 15 will do for outdoor protection. However, the type of activity you do and the length of time you are exposed to the sun will have to determine if you need a higher SPF or not. The more extensive your outdoor activity is, the higher the SPF you will require. Extensive outdoor activity would require SPF 40 to 50 to guarantee adequate protection. SPF 15 may probably be adequate for normal and common everyday activities.

4. All sunscreen products are the same. They only differ in brand names.

Not all products are made exactly the same though they are all sunscreens. Some products could have better efficacy than others based on the components used. There may be some high-priced products that don't perform very well. On the contrary, there may be some more affordable products that are of high quality. The effectiveness of a product also depends on the type of your skin. There are products that are safe for sensitive skin. Although some good brands may provide good results, it is always best to look into the ingredients. It is best to be sure than to cure. There may be some dangerous ingredients that are contained in the products.

The different products in the market may cause confusion to many consumers. Proper knowledge and awareness about the proper products may offer you effective results. Select the suitable solskydd (sunscreen) to suit your needs so can savor the sun and get the right protection for you.
